Academy of New Church vs. Life Center Recap
In a highly anticipated game that featured two of the area’s top teams, Academy of the New Church easily defeated Life Center (NJ) by a score of 76-58 at the Philly.com/Rally Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic at Philadelphia University. Academy of the New Church, led by big men Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse commit) and Malcolm Gilbert (Pitt) dominated the glass on both ends of the court. Junior Daniel Pittman led the Lions with 22 points, and credited this to, “Always playing really hard and aggressive, and never giving up.” Coach Kevin Givens was also happy with his team’s resolve, saying that, “The guys played really tough.” He also felt that Pittman and Villanova-bound junior Savon Lloyd-Goodman (18 points) were able to put up solid numbers because, “The big guys played really tough inside, and them dominating the paint and glass allowed our outside shooters to do work.” The win moves the Lions to 3-1 on the year, including a huge win over then-number 1 in the nation Findlay Prep (NV).
Life Center’s loss showed just how much they miss their star from last year, Dion Waiters, who is now at Syracuse. The Warriors were thoroughly dominated on both ends of the floor, trailing by as much as 30 at one point. Vaunted Girard College transfer John Johnson (Pitt) could not get much of anything going, and the whole team looked overmatched by ANC’s size and speed on both ends of the court. Life Center was led by Ohio State commit LaQuinton Ross, who scored 18 points. The loss drops the Warriors to 4-1 on the season.
