If you watch or listen to the pros, you’ll see that they all employ these rules every time they call a game. Here’s the first:
Timing is an essential aspect of sports broadcasting both visually and orally. The studio director must time each camera change with precision and strong intention, while the commentator must time his analysis and comments with the pace of the game. By changing camera angles and showing replays, the director’s timing can strongly influence the way viewers perceive a game. Likewise, the timing of the commentator’s analysis can make or break the viewers’ involvement in the game.
